[79.01] Chandra observations of the X-ray environment of BL Lacs

D. Donato, M. Gliozzi (GMU), R.M. Sambruna (NASA - Goddard)

According to the unification schemes for radio loud Active Galactic Nuclei, BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) are sources seen along the jet axis, while the Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type I radio galaxies are the misaligned parent population. A model-independent probe of this idea is represented by studies of the near environment: similar large-scale emission will support the unification schemes. In a previous work we showed that extended emission is present in 3 BL~Lacs and its characteristics are consistent with those found around FR Is. These results were obtained using data from very short Chandra ACIS observations of a limited sample of 6 closeby objects (z<0.07). Here we show preliminary findings from a study of archival Chandra longer exposures of additional 9 sources, whose redshift extends to z=0.36. For 6 sources the observations were performed using the High Resolution Camera (HRC), while the remaining sources have been observed by ACIS.
