We present high angular resolution (1"; 200 AU) observations from a large program studying deeply embedded low-mass protostars (class 0 objects) with the Submillimeter Array. In total 9 different sources have been observed in a wide variety of lines of common molecular species together with continuum. The observations are interpreted on basis of detailed dust and line radiative transfer models. The continuum observations resolve the innermost regions of the protostellar envelopes and place strong constraints on the presence and properties of their circumstellar disks. The line observations reveal the complex structure of these sources, for example, the chemical and dynamical variations throughout the envelopes and the importance of the outflows on both.
