[105.02] The Megaparsec--scale Environments of Young Radio Galaxies

E. P. Smith (LASP/GSFC/NASA), C. P. O'Dea, W. H. de Vries, S. A. Baum (STScI), R. Gelderman (Western Kentucky Univ.)

We present preliminary results from a program of broad--band imaging in B, V\/ and R\/, of a well defined sample of CSS/GPS sources and a comparison sample of 3CR sources. The GPS/CSS sources are compact powerful radio sources which may be the progenitors of the large scale classical doubles. One long term goal of the project is to study the clustering environments of these sources in order to determine whether GPS/CSS sources have simpler behavior on the Hubble diagram and are better standard candles than the 3CR objects. At present we have clustering measurements for the Mpc--scale environments of 17 sources.
