[17.05] \Delta T_SZ - L_x Relation as a Cosmological Tool

A. R. Cooray, J. E. Carlstrom, L. Grego, W. L. Holzapfel (U. of Chicago), M. Joy (NASA/MSFC)

We present the relation between \Delta T_SZ, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature decrement due to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, and L_x, the X-ray luminosity of galaxy clusters. We discuss this relation in terms of the cluster properties, and show that the observed \Delta T_SZ-L_x relation is in agreement with both the M_gas-L_x relation based on X-ray emission observations, and the L_x-T_e relation based on numerical simulations and observations. We will outline several uses of the \Delta T_SZ-L_x relation and its possible redshift evolution in present cluster based cosmological studies. This relation may well be a crucial, and much needed, tool to study the distant SZ clusters.
