[33P.03] A Revised Bidirectional Reflectance Function for Planetary Regoliths

B. Hapke (U. of Pittsburgh)

A new analytic bidirectional reflectance function for planetary regoliths is proposed. The function is an improvement on the author's previous function (Hapke, 1981, JGR 86, 3039; Hapke 1986, Icarus 67, 264; Hapke 1993, Theory of Reflectance and Emittance Spectroscopy, Cambridge U. Press) in two ways: (1) It contains a mathematical description of the coherent backscatter opposition effect in addition to the shadow hiding opposition effect. (2) A more accurate description of multiple scattering based on the principle of embedded invariance is used. Although the multiple scattering term is somewhat more complicated than in the previous function, it is still analytic, and should be especially useful for media of anisotropic scatterers.
