[68.04] Discovery of Cataclysmic Variable Candidates in the Globular Cluster Omega Centauri

J.E. Carson, A.C. Cool (San Francisco State University), J. E. Grindlay (Harvard University)

Theoretical models of the dynamical evolution of globular clusters predict large numbers of cataclysmic variables (CVs). In the past few years the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has enabled us to penetrate the crowded cores of clusters where CVs are expected to congregate. We present recent findings of two promising CV candidates in Omega Centauri, identified by their H-alpha emission, UV excess, and x-ray brightness, at distances from the center of about .5 core radii. We compare the properties of these sources to those of six other globular cluster CVs detected with HST -- four in NGC 6397 and two in NGC 6752, specifically examining their x-ray to optical flux ratios and UV brightnesses. Future observations aimed at confirming that the sources are indeed CVs are also discussed.
