[65.09] An Upper Limit on the FUV Extragalactic Background

J. Murthy, R. C. Henry (JHU), J. B. Holberg (U of A.)

We have analyzed 17 years of Voyager observations of the diffuse radiation field. From these data, we place a 1 sigma upper limit of 30 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 on the extragalactic diffuse background between 912 Å and 1150 Å. This is the lowest limit thus far recorded and rules out the much higher intensities of several hundred units observed at wavelengths longer than 1216 Å. We also present observations of dust scattered starlight from at different locations, some of which are at intensities of several thousand photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 A-1.
