[43.12] Burst-induced pulsar phase shifts in GRO J1744-28

Michael Stark (University of Maryland, College Park), Keith Jahoda (Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics)

We have studied the large sample of bursts from GRO J1744-28, the Bursting Pulsar, observed by the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. This source underwent two outbursts in the early months of 1996 and 1997 which included frequent large X-ray bursts. As this was the first source observed to exhibit frequent X-ray bursts {\em and\/} regular pulsation, it offers the first chance to study the interaction between the mechanisms which are responsible for these phenomena. We have parameterized the bursts and the accompanying phase-shift in the pulsar signal in terms of their magnitude and duration. We attempt here to explain the relation between the bursting and the pulsar in terms of these parameters.
