[70.01] The Shapley Program - 2000 and On

A. G. Davis Philip (ISO and Union College)

The Shapley Visiting Lectureships Program is undergoing some changes. One change is the creation of a Shapley Program Web page attached to the AAS Web homepage. The complete Shapley brochure is presented here as well as an application form that can be filled out on line. This form is then automatically emailed to the Shapley account at Union College. In the 1998-99 academic year there were a number of times when an electronic form was received in the morning and the Shapley visit was arranged by the afternoon of the same day. In the 1999 - 2000 academic year, instead of mailing out thousands of the multi-paged brochures, postcards will be sent to institutions with instructions on how to go to the AAS Shapley Web page. Applications will be filled out there instead of on the paper forms. As the next few years go by we will build up a larger body of institutions that know about the Shapley Program and they can apply when they decide they would like to have a visit. A second change is the extension of the Shapley Program to Mexico. One visit to Mexico City will take place in March, 1999. I hope that in the next academic year we can increase the number of Mexican contacts. Four Mexican astronomers have been appointed to the Shapley Lecturer list and they can help in making some of the Mexican visits. Although the majority of US visits are still made by car we are increasing the number of visits made by air travel so as to satisfy the requests of some institutions for specific speakers or specific topics.
