[44.01] Cosmic Ray Rejection and the Next Generation Space Telescope

We propose a method for identifying and removing cosmic rays from the NGST data. The NGST instrumentation design team anticipates non-destructive-read capability for the detectors. We utilize this capability to perform an up-the-ramp observation sequence, which we analyze to identify and remove cosmic rays from the data. This strategy provides near-optimal signal-to-noise performance while removing cosmic ray contamination and providing a method for detecting saturation.

We demonstrate our method for identifying and removing cosmic rays on simulated NGST data (with over 95% accuracy) and compare our results and data quality with those of alternative processing methods. We also discuss the implications for performing cosmic ray rejection on-board the NGST versus doing so after downlink.
