[63.03] Halo Stars

The Galactic halo field and the globular clusters contain the oldest known stars, and thus analyses of their metallicities ([Fe/H]) and [el/Fe]-ratios provide important clues to the origin of the chemical elements. Several relevant topics will be touched on in this talk: (1) Variations in the [el/Fe]-ratios among halo stars with metallicities below that of the most metal-poor globular clusters; (2) How reliable are determinations of [el/Fe]-ratios among metal-poor stars? Case in point: [O/Fe] as [Fe/H] declines; (3) Anomalies in the [Ba/Eu]-ratio (or s- to r-process species); (4) Abundance ratios in halo field stars vs globular cluster stars; (5) Use of Fe-surrogates in low-resolution studies.
