[63.02] Initial Stellar Mass Function and the Star Formation Rate

Was the initial stellar mass function very different at early epochs in the universe? And why does the star formation rate vary so dramatically between galaxies like the Milky Way and extreme starburst galaxies? These are two issues that I will address in the context of simple models of star formation.
