[48.03] The Origin of the Black Hole in M87

C. L. Joseph, D. Merritt, R. Olling, M. Valluri (Rutgers)

Many physical processes associated with the formation and growth of supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei leave unique signatures in the stellar density and phase-space distributions. We report on the first attempts to use HST/STIS data to determine the mechanism responsible for the creation of the 3-billion solar mass black hole in the nucleus of M87.
