[7.05] Surface brightness analysis of HST WFPC2 galaxies

K. U. Ratnatunga, R. E. Griffiths (Carnegie Mellon University)

Quantitative size and morphological estimates have been derived for galaxies in the HST WFPC2 Medium Deep Survey. Structural parameters have been estimated for about 100K galaxies, including 2-dimensional Disk + Bulge decomposition for about 10K galaxies. These are now available via a web-interface at http://archive.stsci.edu/mds/

Surface brightnesses of this sample have been analyzed in order to understand the intrinsic properties, the cosmological surface brightness dimming, and the sample selection effects. We reproduce Freeman's law for disk galaxies and estimate the cosmic dispersion in this relation.
