[1.46] Equilibrium and Stability of Prominence Flux Ropes

B.H. Fong (National Center for Atmospheric Research)

We present two-dimensional equilibrium solutions to the MHD equations relevant to solar prominences. Computationally determined configurations are found that have realistic pressure, density, and temperature profiles, supported by nearly force-free, flux rope-type magnetic fields. The stability of such equilibria to gravity and pressure driven modes is determined. The evolution of marginally unstable equilibria is discussed within the framework of a nonlinear dynamical theory for pressure and gravity driven modes.
