[39.06] Strong Gravity and Neutron Star X-ray Binaries

M. C. Miller (University of Maryland)

The kilohertz brightness oscillations discovered around neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries are remarkably sensitive probes of strong gravity and dense matter. I will highlight some of the fundamental strong-gravity results obtained with RXTE observations. I will also discuss the advances expected with a future high-area X-ray timing mission, including the exciting prospect of being able to test quantitatively the predictions of general relativity in strong gravity. This work is supported in part by NASA grant NAG 5-9756 at Maryland.
