We focus on the diffuse X-ray emission from galaxies and clusters of galaxies in the first 300 ksec of exposure of the Chandra Deep Field South. Such an exposure allows to detect diffuse sources down to a surface brightness limit of 5 10-17 erg s-1 cm-2 arcmin-2 in the soft (0.5-2 keV) band. The implications for the thermodynamics of diffuse, hot baryons are discussed.
