[1.02] Chandra X-ray Spectroscopy of NGC 4151

P. M. Ogle, C. R. Canizares, J. C. Lee, H. L. Marshall (MIT CSR)

Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observations of NGC 4151 reveal a rich X-ray emission line spectrum originating in the extended narrow-line region (NLR). The spatial extent and kinematics of the X-ray emitting region match those of the optical NLR, but the ionization level is much higher. The X-ray spectrum is hybrid, with emission from both photoionized and collisionally ionized plasmas. >From the widths of the radiative recombination continua (RRCs), we find a temperature of T=4\times104 K for the cool photoionized component. The hot collisionally ionized component has a temperature T~107 K. The hot component may constitute the inter-cloud medium which provides pressure confinement for the narrow-line clouds. Otherwise it could arise in shocks between the outflowing narrow-line clouds and ambient ISM of the host galaxy. We discuss the merits of both of these models. This work was funded in part by contracts NAS8-38249 and SAO SV1-61010.
