[15.09] Hard X-ray evidence for Advection Dominated Flows in the core of elliptical galaxies

M. Guainazzi (XMM-Newton Science Operation Center, VILSPA, ESA)

We report the results of a BeppoSAX program to study "hard tails" in the core of nearby elliptical galaxies. The hard X-ray coverage of the PDS instrument on board BeppoSAX (15-200 keV) ideally complements the high-resolution and high-throughput imaging of Chandra and XMM-Newton. These results provide the first firm and direct X-ray evidence that Advection Dominated Flows are indeed at work in the core of elliptical galaxies. The cases of M87, NGC1052 and NGC4696 are presented, and the results compared with a partly overlapping sample of ASCA observations. The implication of these results for the synthesis of the X-ray background are also discussed
