[31.19] X-Ray Variability Analysis of Accreting Black Hole and ``Atoll" Neutron Star Binary Systems

T.J. Maccarone, P.S. Coppi (Department of Astronomy, Yale University)

We apply several variability analysis techniques to data from Cygnus X-1 in all three spectral states, LMC X-1, GX 339-4 in its hard state, and several neutron star sources in the atoll state. We present the results of autocorrelation, cross correlation, time skewness and bispectrum analyses of these sources. We compare the results to simulated light curves and show how these results place significant constraints on several popular models for the emission mechanisms in X-ray binaries.
