[15.01] The Nuclear X-ray Properties and X-ray Binary Populations of Three Elliptical Galaxies Observed with Chandra

M. Loewenstein, L. Angelini, R.F. Mushotzky, K.A. Arnaud (NASA/GSFC)

We provide details to supplement R. Mushotzky's invited talk on new Chandra results on the elliptical galaxies NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. We report on the properties of the hot interstellar medium in the inner regions and on our upper limits on the emission associated with the putative supermassive black holes, and discuss the implications of these for the nature of the nuclear accretion flow. We also discuss the discrete source population, including our measurements of the luminosity functions and spectral properties, and compare and contrast these populations with each other and with spiral bulge low-mass x-ray binary populations.
