[13.18] Velocity Gradients in the Intracluster Gas of the Centaurus Cluster (Abell 3526)

R.A. Dupke, J.N. Bregman (University of Michigan)

We present some preliminary results of an X-ray spectroscopic analysis of radial velocity mapping of the intracluster gas of Abell 3526. The temperature of this cluster is low (~3keV) and the central regions of the cluster have very high metal abundances (~solar). These characteristics, combined with the existing long ASCA SIS exposures, makes this cluster a good target for measuring gas bulk velocities. The SIS analysis indicates a significant velocity gradient (~300km/s arcmin) along a line perpendicular to the line that connects the clusters' center and the infalling galaxy group Cen 45,centered on NGC 4709. We compare the results to the velocity gradients previously observed by the authors for Perseus (Abell 426). We also present a comparison of the observed velocity gradients in these clusters to recent off-center merger simulations.
