[4.09] Chandra observations of NGC 1068

We present Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with ACIS. Significant extended X-ray emission is seen, revealing structure on arc second to arc minute scales including the presence of point-source X-ray binaries. In particular, bright X-ray emission extends from the nucleus to the N and NE, the same directions as the radio continuum jet and the optical narrow line region. The X-rays show a V-shaped structure coincident with the apparent bow shock at the end of the radio jet 6 arc secs from the nucleus. We discuss the spectra of the bright circumnuclear region and the arc minute scale diffuse emission and attempt to distinguish between photoionized and collisionally ionized plasma models.
