[54.05] Current Astronomy Topics in the Precollege Science Classroom

C.R. Weehler (San Antonio Independent School District, TX), S. Hart (Pinson Valley High School, Pinson, AL), S.H. Jacoby (NOAO)

High School teachers Weehler and Hart worked with the NOAO Educational Outreach department and staff astronomers to develop a format for delivering current research results and images to the classroom. Goals included timeliness, accuracy, and usability of the information, as well as visual appeal and relevance of topics to the precollege science classroom. The lessons learned and expertise brought to the project by Weehler and Hart have applications to other Educational Outreach projects involving the translation of technical materials to the appropriate level for public or classroom use. Results of this work will be presented, including a reformatted NOAO Current Science Web Page and poster explaining spectroscopy.

This work is funded through a RET supplement to the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates program at Kitt Peak National Observatory.
