[38.09] Interstellar Dust Measured through Nearby Galaxies

O. K. Krienke (Seattle Pacific U), P. W. Hodge (UWash)

Using HST archival images, together with spectroscopic results from the literature, we have measured the reddening through the irregular Local Group galaxy IC 1613 by photometry of background galaxies. Similar results were obtained from HST images and redshifts from the 3.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory for galaxies detected through Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy. In both cases, the general reddening found was below the detection limit. However, for the SMC, for which we mapped galaxies through two locations in the core, the detected reddening was significant.
