[73.05] The Buried QSO in the z=2.4 Radio Galaxy 4C+43.15

We present near-infrared images and spectra of the z=2.4 radio galaxy 4C+43.15 (B3 0731+438), obtained with the Keck and Hale telescopes. We resolve the source in the images and spectra, as well as clearly detect the emission lines and continuum. 4C+43.15 has a complex emission-line morphology in [OIII] and H-alpha, covering more than 5 arcsec on the sky. In addition there is a broad H-alpha line with a FWHM~17000 km/s. After removal of the emission-line contamination, we find that the faint continuum seen in the spectrum has K=19.7 mag, and H-K=1.6 mag. The red continuum and lack of detection of broad-line emission in the rest-frame UV suggests that this galaxy harbors a buried QSO. We estimate the reddening to the broad line region to be E(B-V)~0.7-1.0 mag, which is also consistent with the observed H-K color, provided the source has the intrinsic optical colors of a typical QSO. This suggests that the central QSO dominates the observed K-band light in 4C+43.15
