[8.02] The central region of M31 observed with XMM-Newton. Spectral properties and evolution of individual sources.

We report on the first two observations of the central region of M31 with XMM-Newton observatory. High sensitivity of the XMM X-ray instruments allows us to perform a detailed study of spectral properties and variability of a nearly 40 bright point sources. According to the results of spectral analysis the X-ray sources can be divided into four main classes: the super-soft sources, the hard sources, the sources with soft spectra and the sources with high intrinsic absorption. Several sources show a significant variability between the two XMM observations and earlier Chandra and ROSAT observations. We compare the spectral and temporal properties of the bright X-ray source population of the central region of M31 with the properties of the X-ray sources in the corresponding region of our own Galaxy.
