The Astronomical Almanac is a joint publication of the U.S. Naval Observatory (US) and Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office (UK). The next edition (available January 2002 for year 2003) of this publication contains several important new features and changes. For example, there is a completely revised section on Minor Planets/Comets that includes modern ephemerides of the 15 largest asteroids. The table of x-ray sources is completely new. Positions for stars in the list of bright stars and radial velocity standard stars start with the Hipparcos catalogue positions instead of FK5 positions. The UBVRI table now lists the Landolt standards. The underlying planetary ephemerides are now the JPL DE405. Research is underway at almanac offices around the world on the implications of the new IAU resolutions that establish the International Celestial Reference Frame, redefine the origin of the celestial coordinate system, and approve a new precession-nutation theory. Regular status reports to the astronomical community on The Astronomical Almanac are planned.
