C.E. Woodward (Univ. Minnesota), AAS Committee on the Status of Minorities in Astronomy Team
Demographic trends in the United States over the last decade show a marked increase in diversity. However, the increase of diveristy in the physical sciences has remained modest, especially in Astronomy and Astrophysics disciplines. To initiate dialogue, ultimately leading to the articulation of programmatic strategies to advance diversity within the astronomical community, we will review the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in the discipline. One objective of this activity is to provide current information and trends to assess whether the discipline is poised to take advantage of the intellectual potential and promise of a diverse population.
