[62.04] Early Observations with the ACS Grism

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) was installed aboard the Hubble Space Telescope in March 2002. The Wide Field Channel (WFC) of the ACS covers a field of view of 3.4 \times 3.4 arcmin and is equipped with a grism, allowing for slitless multi-object optical spectroscopy over the entire field of view covering the spectral range 550 -- 1100 nm at R ~ 100. The grism may also be used with the High Resolution Channel (HRC) on ACS which covers a field of view of 26 \times 29 arcsec. We will present early images taken with the grism on the ACS during orbital verification tests designed to calibrate its dispersion, throughput, flat field, and fringing properties. We will discuss the standard procedures for acquiring, reducing, and extracting grism spectra. We will also highlight science applications for the ACS grism, including the detection of high redshift (z > 4) Ly\alpha emission-line objects.
