[5.03] The Cluster Galaxy Circular Velocity Function

V. Desai, D. Reed, J. J. Dalcanton, L. Mayer, T. Quinn, F. Governato (UW)

We construct circular velocity functions for galaxies in nearby (z < 0.1) clusters using the Tully Fisher and Fundamental Plane Relations and surface photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release. These are compared to halo circular velocity functions for a large number of clusters drawn from a high-resolution (~106 particles within the virial radius of each cluster) N-body simulation with a \LambdaCDM cosmology. We find that, for circular velocities greater than about 200 km s-1, the velocity distribution of cluster substructure in N-body simulations matches the observations. Below this limit, galaxies are overpredicted to a larger degree than are field galaxies. We also explore the environmental dependence of the observed and simulated velocity functions.
