Spying on your neighbors can be an illuminating experience...
We present the RECONS (Research Consortium on Nearby Stars) effort to take an accurate census of all objects within 10 pc and outside of the Solar System. The result is an accurate cross-sectional study of your neighbors, who tend to be small and red, and lurk unseen in the night. There are a few brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets as well.
We will introduce you to more than a dozen of your newest neighbors, discovered during a large southern sky parallax effort known as CTIOPI (CTIO Parallax Investigation), which has been carried out on the CTIO 0.9m and 1.5m telescopes since 1999 under the auspices of the NOAO Surveys Program. Only by watching your neighbors for several years can you really be sure what they're up to, and we'll show you that some of them have small companions hanging around with them. The first hints of these companions have been revealed via astrometric perturbations found during CTIOPI.
