We present sub-arcsecond resolution BIMA* 12CO(1-0) and PdBI 12CO(2-1) observations of the nearby QSO I Zw 1. The 12CO(1-0) observations show the presence of a ring-like circumnuclear structure at a distance of ~ 1 kpc from the center of the host galaxy. These molecular clouds are likely the site of a circumnuclear starburst which is indicated by NIR observations. The 12CO(2-1) observations show emission, which is more centrally peaked, and the ring-like structure is not evident in these observations. This can be explained by different excitation conditions in the nuclear region. The observations allow a first insight into the physics of molecular clouds in the host galaxy of a QSO at a sub-kpc scale.
