[18.07U] Design and Construction of Calibration Equipment for Cryogenic Thermal Sensors

R. Cool (U Wyoming), E. Silver (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA)

Currently, microcalorimeter detectors being developed for future X-ray astronomy applications require temperatures as low as 65 mK to perform nominally. The processes used to reach these low temperatures are diverse, but all require precise knowledge of thermal conditions throughout the cooling apparatus to be successful. We discuss the design and construction of a cryostat used to calibrate several ruthenium oxide thermistors to be used in future, large scale, cryogenic experiments. We also include experimental relations for each of the thermistors calibrated.

R. Cool thankfully acknowledges NSF REU grant AST-9731923 and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics for providing funding, materials, and support needed in this research.
