[53.13] Using Scientific Grade Detectors to Produce Astronomical Images for the Public

H. Mathis (NOAO)

Our group uses the sophistication of the Kitt Peak telescopes and detectors to create the highest quality astronomy pictures Kitt Peak is capable of. These pictures in turn are available for public use. The intent is that the images deliver a quality suitable for textbooks and magazines. Using the images in venues such as textbooks and magizines promotes an environment for learning. Pictures can help an individual learning about science, astronomy in particular, and what it is that professional astronomers are looking at when they do their science. These images can be used throughout all levels of education to promote different aspects of astronomy.
