[97.03] A Direct Upper Limit on the Density of Intergalactic Dust

F. Paerels, A. Petric, G. Telis, D. J. Helfand (Columbia University)

We present a preliminary upper limit on the density of smoothly distributed, large-grained intergalactic dust . The upper limit derives from the absence of a detectable X-ray scattering halo in a deep image of a bright, distant (z=4.3) quasar. The upper limit is well below dust densities that could have fundamentally affected the SN Ia Hubble Diagram.
