[14.02] Multi-Wavelength Observations of Barred, Flocculent Galaxies

D. L. Ratay, S. T. Gottesman (University of Florida)

The vast majority of galaxies that have bars also show spiral arm structure. However, this does not hold true for all galaxies with bars. We have selected a sample of barred, flocculent galaxies from Elmegreen & Elmegreen (1982) to study in a multi-wavelength campaign. We hope to identify the dynamical properties of these systems which enable bars to form, but not spiral arm structure. We have found assymetries (companions, disk disturbance) in these galaxies at all wavelengths. This may indicate the importance of small satellites and clouds on the overall morphology of the large system.
