[14.03] Diffuse X-ray Emission from NGC 3184 and its correlation with H-alpha structures.

The spatial distribution and filling factor of the hot gas responsible for the galactic soft X-ray emission are largely unknown due to the opacity of our galaxy to soft X-rays. We observed NGC 3184, a face-on spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way, with the Changra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S detector to characterize the X-ray diffuse emission of that galaxy, and to infer the possible distribution within our own galaxy. An image of the X-ray emission at energies below 1 keV shows enhanced surface brightness coincident with areas of H-alpha structure. We compared the X-ray image with high-resolution images (B, V, R, narrow-band H-alpha, and narrow band continuum near H-alpha) acquired with the WIYN telescope to investigate the correlation between galactic structures and X-ray emission.
