[112.02] An ATCA Survey of UCHII regions in the Magellanic Clouds

We present a systematic survey for ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions in the Magellanic Clouds. The physics of massive star formation (MSF) is a critical astrophysical problem, of which our understanding is still incomplete. The study of MSF began in our galaxy with complete several surveys of UCHII regions, but this had not been done for other galaxies. We selected candidate regions by their IRAS colors and imaged them at 3 and 6 cm at high resolution with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found many compact thermal radio sources. We discuss their radio and infrared properties and compare them with star formation regions in the Galaxy. This type of systematic assessment of IRAS diagnostics in the Magellanic Clouds is important groundwork for the upcoming SIRTF mission. The physical scale of SIRTF's resolution in nearby galaxies will be similar to that of IRAS in the Magellanic Clouds.
