[50.10] SDSS Survey for Milky Way Satellite Galaxies and Stars in the High-Velocity Clouds

We are conducting a uniform survey for resolved low surface brightness Milky Way satellite galaxies based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Galaxy candidates are identified as spatial overdensities of resolved stars that satisfy both color and magnitude criteria and have been smoothed with a spatial filter. Our survey is sensitive to systems with surface brightnesses up to 50\times less than that of Sextans, the lowest surface brightness Local Group member known. We have calculated detailed detection limits that depend on galaxy size and distance, for a purely old stellar population. These detection limits are coupled with our non-detection of stars associated with HVCs and CHVCs to quantitatively limit their stellar content. We present the status of our survey and prospects for candidate follow-up.
