[27.08] Spectroscopy of red giants in M4 with the WIYN telescope.

E. Thompson, C. Pilachowski (Indiana University)

An analysis of the chemical composition of 35 red giants in the globular cluster M4 is presented. The spectra were obtained as part of a survey to look for lithium in globular cluster red giants. The Hydra multi-fiber spectrograph at the 3.5m WIYN telescope on Kitt Peak was used for observations from 6470-6850 angstroms with the echelle mode. The stars cover a four magnitude range along the red giant branch. Elemental abundances including Mg, Al, several iron group metals, La, and Eu are derived for each star. Some giants exhibited detectable abundances of lithium. The abundances of lithium and other elements are examined as a function of evolutionary phase along the red giant branch.

The research support of Indiana University is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
