The Space Telescope Science Institute is planning deep observations of a region in the direction of the CDF-S GOODS area using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) as a service to the scientific community. The observations will be in four filters: F435W, F606W, F775W, and F850LP. A total of 410 orbits of Director's Discretionary time will be devoted to this field, enabling sensitivities approximately 1.5 magnitudes deeper than the deepest exposures in the Hubble Deep Fields. This sensitivity will be adequate to resolve galaxies at redshifts beyond 6. The resulting data are likely to be the deepest visual observations of any region of the universe for a decade or longer.
This talk will describe the planned observations, the planning process to arrive at this plan, and a few of the scientific areas that the deep field might advance.
