[2.04] Massively Parallel Element Production Calculations under Java Control

We are developing a series of tools that permit astrophysical calculations to be implemented using compiled code (F90, C, or C++) on a Beowulf cluster, but with the setup, execution, and analysis of results under the full control of graphical user interfaces written in Java. Although the full portability of Java between platforms is weakly compromised by the linkage to underlying compiled modules, these linkages are systematically implemented using standard Java classes and one still retains a high degree of portability for the graphical interfaces. The result is a seamless system that feels to the user like an integrated Java interface for setup, execution, and analysis of a calculation, but that uses transparently the power of a fully compiled parallel code for compute-intensive operations. We shall describe the application of such a system to element production networks running in parallel on a Beowulf cluster for nova and X-ray burst simulations.
