[2.05] Improved IUE High Dispersion Extraction for NEWSIPS Data

M. Van Steenberg (NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center), P. Lawton (EER Systems, Inc.), D. Massa (SGT, Inc.), N. Oliversen (U.S. Naval Observatory)

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) 'NEWSIPS' processed high dispersion data show substantial improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio's of the intensity calibrated spatially resolved (SIHI) files compared to IUE data processed with the original IUESIPS processing system. However, the NEWSIPS extracted (MXHI) data show a number of serious extraction problems (e.g. ripple correction errors, incorrect line depths, and time dependent flux levels), which affect a significant fraction of the NEWSIPS IUE high dispersion archive. In particular, this problem renders ISM and stellar wind line studies of hot stars nearly impossible with the standard NEWSIPS extracted high dispersion data. We have develop an improved high dispersion extraction algorithm based on a localized version of the IUE optimal-type extraction algorithm. We present comparisons between the IUE extraction methods and to key data from HST for cross calibration.

We acknowledging funding for this work from the NASA Astrophysics Data Program.
