[34.10] Vesta: Additional Spectral Reflectance Features in the UV/VIS

Spectral evidence for the presence of pyroxene as the primary mineral in the surface material of asteroid 4 Vesta is largely based on the characteristics of the 1- and 2 um pyroxene absorption features in its reflectance spectrum. In an effort to refine the compositional information on Vesta, we have obtained moderate resolution reflectance spectra in the 400- to 600-nm spectral range covering all longitudes (Vilas et al., Icarus 147, 2000). These spectra were obtained generally to search for a spin-forbidden absorption feature near 505 nm, however, multiple small features located at different wavelengths within this spectral region (e.g., 425 nm, 480 nm) are also apparent. We will present results of this examination of Vesta's UV/VIS surface features, and the implications for Vesta's surface composition.
