[19.09] Undergraduate Student Research at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory

N. S. van der Bliek, A. B. Whiting, R. C. Smith (CTIO / NOAO)

For most of a decade CTIO has provided a unique opportunity for selected US and Chilean undergraduate students, by means of the NSF funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, and a parallel program for Chilean students, Prácticas de Investigaciónes de Astronomía, funded by NOAO.

Each year a mixed group of six to eight students lives and works together on the La Serena premises of AURA, for ten weeks over the southern summer (January-March). In an international environment under some of the best skies in the world, the students learn about astronomy by doing it. The program includes hands-on observing using CTIO telescopes, individual research projects under the direction of staff astronomers, and interaction with scientists at the forefront of the field. The students present results of their research at the following January AAS meeting--like this one.
