[135.07] Using Computer-Based Activities in Introductory Astronomy Instruction

I. Romanovskaya (Houston Community College)

This presentation provides an introduction to innovative ways for facilitating active learning by using dynamic and interactive computer-based activities. Presentation demonstrates how the computer-based activities engage students in working with data, images, and animations to make discoveries just like professional astronomers.

Presentation includes examples of introducing important concepts of physics and their application to studying orbital motion; predicting the future of the Solar System; discovering extrasolar planets; studying properties of stars and stellar evolution.

New techniques of using computer to reduce grading time to a few seconds and provide students with detailed feedback are also presented.
