[23.05] The MOJAVE Program: Investigating the Parsec-Scale Evolution of Relativistic Jets in Active Galaxies

M. Lister (Purdue University)

MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) is an ongoing VLBA program to investigate the parsec-scale structural and magnetic field evolution of radio jets associated with active galactic nuclei. Designed as a follow-up to the VLBA 2 cm Survey, MOJAVE is currently providing milliarcsecond-resolution, full polarization images at regular intervals of the brightest 133 jets in the northern sky. Ours is the first complete AGN sample to be selected on the basis of compact jet flux density, and is ideally suited for studying relativistic effects associated with AGN jets. We present results from the first-epoch images of our sample, which reveal strong differences in the magnetic field properties of jets associated with broad-lined quasars versus those associated with weak-lined BL Lacertae objects. We also discuss several interesting trends associated with apparent bending in the jets, including a positive correlation with apparent jet speed, and the existence of steep fractional polarization gradients at the locations of bends.
