[57.06] An Optical Identification Campaign for Ultrasoft X-ray Emitting Objects

A previous survey of the Einstein IPC database yielded a sample of 516 objects with strong components of ultrasoft (i.e., below 0.5 keV) X-ray emission (Thompson et. al., 1998, AJ, 115, 2587). Among this sample are active galactic nuclei, stellar sources, cataclysmic variables, white dwarfs, and pulsars. However, over 60% of the X-ray objects lack optical identifications. We report on the first stage of a campaign to identify these sources using UBV photometry to select candidates for follow-up spectroscopy. This project makes use of the 31-inch telescope at Lowell Observatory and is being carried out under the auspices of the National Undergraduate Research Observatory consortium.
