[5.06] X-Ray and Infrared Observations of Embedded Protostars in NGC 2264

T. Simon, S. E. Dahm (U. of Hawaii)

We present X-ray and near-infrared images of the region around Allen's Source (DAA 6=RAFGL 989) and the area around Castelaz's and Grasdalen's Source (RNO-EW=IRS C) in NGC 2264. We have detected strong, variable X-ray emission from several deeply embedded (Av > 10) Class I protostars in those fields. The brightest source, located southwest of Allen's source, had an X-ray luminosity in excess of Lx = 1032.8 ergs s-1 and an extraordinarily high X-ray temperature of more than 100 MK. A strong K-alpha recombination line of Fe XXV was observed at a pulse-height energy of E=6.74 keV. We also present moderate resolution, near-infrared (1--4 micron) spectra of the embedded objects, which were taken with the SpeX facility instrument on the IRTF. The spectra exhibit deep solid-state (water-ice) absorption bands as well as a variety of emission and absorption features of H I, CO, and both neutral and ionized metals. This research was supported in part by the NASA XMM-Newton Guest Observer program.
